Ben-Yair, Avner


Avner, son of Laura and Abraham Hassan, was born on April 26, 1946 in Tripoli, Libya. In 1952, when he was six years old, he immigrated to Israel with his family. The large family chose to settle in Ashkelon, where Avner began studying. He studied at the Simcha Assaf Elementary School and later went on to study at the religious high school in Ashkelon, where he studied at Yeshivat Hadarom in Rehovot, Avner was among the young sons of the Hassan family, who was blessed with nine sons and daughters. Avner was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early August 1964 and was assigned to the Armored Corps, where he completed basic training in the Armored Corps and was trained as a tank gunner, who loved the armor and was very proud of his unit. In the war, his eldest brother, Eliezer, was killed, and two years later, the family suffered a further blow to the family when his beloved mother died. Avner participated in the braking battles in the Sinai, on the shores of the Great Bitter Wing. On the 27th of Tishrei 5734 (October 23, 1973), his tank was hit directly and he was killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on the Mount of Olives near the grave of his brother Eliezer who fell in the Six-Day War. He left behind a wife and daughter (born after he fell), a father, a brother and sisters. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant.
