Ben-Hamu (Kursia), Shaul
Shaul, son of Zimol and Maimon Son of-Hamu, immigrants from Morocco who moved to Spain, and in 1958 immigrated to Israel and settled in Maalot. Shaul was born on October 5, 1960 in Maalot. He was about seven years old when his father died and left behind a widow and eight children. At first, the mother worked hard for the family until she was injured in a work accident and her hand was partially paralyzed. The family took part in a pension from the National Insurance Institute. In 1978, before joining the IDF, he underwent a pre-military driving course. When he enlisted, he was told that as an orphaned soldier from a large family he had the right to request family support from the IDF, but he refused. On November 3, 1980, he traveled in a military truck with soldiers from his unit from Tekoa to Jerusalem. The truck was in an accident, Shaul fell from the truck and was mortally wounded. He died of his wounds. Shaul was brought to eternal rest in the military section of the cemetery in Ma’alot, leaving behind a mother and seven brothers and sisters, and after him a Torah library was established in Ma’alot.
