Becher, Yaakov (Zacko)


Son of Rachel and Yehuda, Yaakov was born on the 7th of Iyar, May 1, 1925 in Istanbul, Turkey and studied there in a traditional Hebrew school. When he immigrated to Israel in 1942 he studied for a year at the Kfar HaRoeh yeshiva. In 1948 he participated in guarding and defense. Yaakov was about to return to combat service in the Palmach. On the 24th Adar II, April 4, 1948, upon his departure with his friend Josef Engel to protect the security of the workers in the field, and they were ambushed by a gang headed by
an Arab corporal from the Palestine Police and before the kibbutz members could come to their aid they were both killed. Yaakov was laid to rest in the cemetery at Gesher.
