Becher, Nissim
Nissim son of Emma and Shaul Becher was born in October 1925 in Ismailia, Egypt. In Cairo he took an active part in Zionist work and for a time he worked for the Haganah office in Ismailia. There were hidden bomb storage-rooms and the British were about to destroy them, but Nissim made sure to load the bombs on ships and send them to Israel. In April 1946, Nissim made aliyah, his parents followed few monthss later. One day ay the beginning of the War of Independence, Nissim tried to extinguish a fire started by Arabs in a synagogue on the Jaffa border. He was caught by the British, imprisoned in harsh conditions and beaten. After two weeks of much effort on the part of his family and a lawyer, he was released. Upon his release, Nissim joined the war and served in one of the battalions.
He spent two months in the Galilee, in Hulda, fighting on the Jerusalem Road, Latrun, Yazur, Holon and Tel Arish. Because of heart problems, he was discharged, however, Nissim refused the discharge. On September 13, 1948 he set out for a camp near Gedera. On the 13th of Tishrei, 5709 (October 16, 1948) Nissim volunteered to serve as a liaison in the battle for Masmiya, but was killed and buried in Rechovot. On the 2nd of Sivan 5705 (18.5.1950) Nissim was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
