Baron, Victor

Son of Taruk and Ezra. Victor (Vittorio Emanuel) was born in the town of Misorta, in Libya, on the 4th of Tammuz, July 4, 1927. He was born into a large family with eight brothers and sisters. He was educated in the Zionist youth movements. He immigrated to Israel, in 1949, with his family, and immediately upon their arrival in Israel, he was drafted into the IDF. At the end of his military service, Victor began looking for a profession. Having lived in Netanya during this period, he turned to the diamond polishing industry. He studied the profession with dedication, but rarely had a chance to do it professionally. In 1953, Victor joined the Israel Police. Within a short time, at his request, he was transferred to the Israel Prison Service. In the IPS, Victor progressed slowly but firmly in the ranks and positions, and at one time or another, he served in almost all the prisons of the service, during a period of some twenty years. Victor was a warm, peace-loving man, who loved every human being. He loved reading, sports, especially soccer. Victor spent a lot of time with family and friends, loved to have fun, dance and listen to sixties music. He was also drawn to the art of cinema, and he always had a special affection for animals. During leisure hours, Victor volunteered to tutor needy children, in a special institution in Netanya. He liked to work with “marginal” youth, children with a difficult socioeconomic background, and found great satisfaction with the time he spent with them. On Friday, the 22nd of Av, August 16, 1968, Victor was killed, when an accident occurred in his car, at the Jenin-Yizrael junction. The investigation revealed that the accident occurred, due to a car bomb attack by Fatah terrorists. Advanced Sergeant Victor was forty-one years old. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in the Ben Zion neighborhood of Netanya. He was survived by a wife and three children, brothers and sisters. Victor’s widow joined the Prisons Service after his death, and his daughter and son joined the ranks of the security forces. She served for years as a police investigator in Ramat Gan, and his son Arik was a private detective.
