Baievski, Aryeh (Bakalavsky, Gliav Alexeyevich)
Son of Alexey. Born in April 1889 in Helsinki, Finland, he was descended from a noble Ukrainian-Russian family. As a political immigrant, he met with the group of Joseph Trumpeldor, who was fascinated by the Zionist vision and the pioneering spirit of the group, and after serving briefly on an Italian ship that brought pioneers to Haifa decided to immigrate to Palestine and settle there. It seems that during this period of his life he even converted. After arriving in Israel he joined the “Gdud Ha’avoda” and worked in a quarry in Jerusalem. During his free time he served as a guide in the Haganah and contributed many of his knowledge to military matters. But his strong attraction to the sea brought him to Umm Rashrash, the present day Eilat, where he spent some time as representative of the Committee of Delegates. He lived there in harsh climates and solitude and found his livelihood by fishing. Then he recognized the importance of the sea to the people of Israel and to the Zionist enterprise. On the 16th of Tammuz, 16.6.1942, he died after illness and was put to rest in the cemetery on the Mount of Olives.
