Azoulay, Iris
Daughter of Juliet and Elijah. She was born on the 11th of Adar 5731 (11.3.1971) in Jerusalem. Iris was the youngest child in her family with many children – eight in number. She studied at the Yehuda Halevy State Religious School in her neighborhood – Baka and in the ninth grade she studied at the Masorti School. Afterward she moved to the Rene Cassin High School in the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood where she completed her studies in the humanities track and received a matriculation certificate. Iris specialized in art, and wrote an excellent summary work on the painter Reuven Rubin. She planned to continue to specialize in art studies at the theater department at the Hebrew University. In September 1989, Iris was enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces, where she served as an educational noncom. Iris did her work well: “Her beautiful personality and intellectual ability led her to perform her work as an officer,” said her unit commander. The perfection she aspired to, the pleasantness and serenity that she enjoyed, created a good atmosphere around her. On Monday, October 21, 1990, Iris fell in the line of duty. As usual every morning, Iris left her house on her way to the military camp where she served. Not far from her house, she stabbed her with an Arab terrorist. Iris wrestled with him heroically – but he overcame her and put an end to her life. She was nineteen years old. Iris was brought to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Iris left behind her parents, five sisters – Rina, Pnina, Esther, Aliza and Orly and two brothers – Edgar and Mordechai. Her memory was immortalized in the wave until it was built where she fell, as well as in a Torah scroll in a synagogue and library in the Pelech school in the Jordan Valley, donated by her family.
