Son of Ruchama and David. He was born in 1953. In 1956 he immigrated to Israel with his family and began his studies at the Rambam Elementary School in Ashkelon. He continued his mechanical training program at the Ashkelon Municipal High School. Prior to his induction he underwent pre-military training in electronics. At the beginning of December 1970, Avi enlisted in the Israel Air Force as a volunteer in the IDF and was appointed to the highest level of professionalism in the air force, including working under stress conditions and noisy environments, working in squadrons throughout the day and in all weather conditions, He served in the Nesher Brigade in professional and command positions, and was an outstanding soldier on both the professional and command levels in 1976.
