Aharoni, Miriam

Daughter of Miriam and Mori Aharon, was born in 1924 in Yemen. Her father, who was a well-to-do man, immigrated to Israel before the First World War, but could not manage to return to Yemen. In the wake of a plot that he was sentenced to death, and the great bribes the family gave in order to save him, he lost his material status and Miriam grew up in a panic and became ill. In 1941 she was sent to Israel and educated at the Meir Shfeya Youth Village and then moved to Tel Aviv, where she joined the Irgun underground in 1943 and played very dangerous positions there. When her brother pleaded with her to protect herself and not forget her duty to work and help her old father who remained in Yemen, she replied that she would work, but she would continue to fight and give her soul for the freedom of the people and the land. In the winter of 1948, she took part in a sappers’ squad in Manshiyya and Abu Kabir, during which she participated in the Etzel attack on Jaffa. On May 4, 1948, the Jewish village of Yehudia took part in the conquest of the Jewish village by the Etzel unit, which was established on June 11, 1948. The enemy attacked the village with large forces and the village defenders did not succeed in repelling the attack Miriam refused to leave the site without her commander, (11.6.1948). Miriam was laid to rest on the 11th of Iyar 5712 (May 6, 1952) in the Kiryat Shaul military cemetery.
