Zwiebel, Aryeh (Leon)

Aryeh (Leon), the son of Hannah and Shlomo Zwiebel, was born on May 16, 1926, in Czernowitz, Bukovina, Romania. He successfully studied in elementary school and later in high school until the hardships and persecutions of 1941 forced him to stop his studies. After a few months, his entire family was deported to Transnistria with the masses of Jews, and the 15-year-old boy worked very hard for a loaf of bread a day for himself and his parents. When they were liberated from the camp and returned to Czernowitz, Aryeh continued his studies.
When he informed his parents of his decision to immigrate to Eretz Israel, they agreed with a heavy heart and hoped to follow him. Shortly after his marriage he immigrated with his wife to Israel on board the “Yordei Ha-Sira” ship and spent five months in Cyprus and on January 15, 1947, they arrived in Israel.
Aryeh was drafted into the army in early April 1948 and served in the Carmeli Brigade. After stopping the invasion of the Jordan Valley, our forces took the initiative and attacked in the Gilboa area, and on the night of June 2-3, the Carmeli Brigade attacked Jenin and occupied the outposts that controlled the city. Jordan counterattacked and our forces were forced to withdraw, and on that day Aryeh fell, on the 25th of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948). On the 17th of Elul 5710 (3.8.1950) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
