Zuckerman, Mordechai


He was born in 1912 in Bessarabia and served as a member of the He – Chaluts movement in 1932. He immigrated to Eretz Israel in 1932 and joined the Palestine Guard Association in 1932. He was one of the first guards in Haifa Bay, On 7 Av, July 24, 1947, while on guard duty with his friend, the two encountered three young Arabs dressed in British army uniform trying to escape after trying to rob a number of houses in the village and shooting at one of the farmers who was surprised. The shots alerted the two guards, but the Arab robbers had already ambushed them and shot them at close range. Mordechai was killed on the spot. He was buried in Sheikh Abirak. He left a pregnant wife and two children. The chapters of his life and heroism appear in “Chapters in the History of Security and the Guarding.”
