Zuckerberger, Chaim (Chaimka)

Chaim (Chaimka), son of Miriam and Jacob Zuckerberger, was born on December 15, 1922 in the village of Nalifno, Carpathian Russia (then Czechoslovakia). He studied in cheder and an elementary school in Czech and Brahini. Chaim immigrated to Israel on the ship “Galileo” and was educated in a youth company in Kibbutz Beit Hashita. Chaim married Aviva and went to work in the Nesher factory as a mechanic. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was drafted into the Carmeli Brigade. He took part in the attacks on Arab transport, the defense of Ramat Yochanan, the victory over the Druze and the conquest of the surrounding villages. Chaim was sent with a machine-gun squad to defend a company that was severely attacked by the enemy. He constantly sprayed fire on the enemy until his weapon was emptied. There he fell, on the 25th of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948). On 3.8.1950, he was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
