Zoller, Yoash

Zoller, Yoash

Son of Dina and Yoel. He was born in Klausowa, Poland. Yoash was deeply influenced by emissaries from the Land of Israel who had been visiting the place, meeting the boys and telling them about the Land of Israel and about life in it. Yoash drank their words thirstily, and gradually the decision to immigrate to Israel and devote his life to preserving it became apparent. In 1931 he immigrated to Eretz Israel and worked as a plasterer. As a member of Hanoar Haoved in Tel Aviv, he responded to the call by the Hashomerim Association to volunteer for the Guard. Yoash was sent to guard the Kooskoos-Tivon. During his tenure in Yokneam, he met Yitzhak Klitshevsky and they both liked each other and became friends in heart and soul. In their role, they were an example of dedication and pioneering. Their working conditions were very difficult. Their area of protection was far from any settlement and surrounded by mountains, and by nature it was an ideal place for an ambush of murderers. Many times they were attacked when they were saved in Yokne’am by a miracle. Every day they would go out to the remote spot without fear and hesitation and do their work faithfully and courageously. On the night of 14 Av (August 2, 1936) he set out for safekeeping as usual. His friend Yitzhak, although he had finished his guard duty there, could not agree that Yoash should go alone to the distant spot and joined him. In the morning when the guards did not return, friends went out to find them and found them killed in the guard post. It turned out that a large gang of Arabs had attacked them and they had been killed in a battle against them. They were brought to eternal rest in a mass grave at the foot of the Carmel near the water cisterns of Yokne’am. Their bones were later transferred to eternal rest in Sheikh-Abrik. His name was immortalized in the book “Blood and Fire of 1936-1938” and “How They Fell” published by Hashomerim Association.
