Zloczewski, Yosef (Avish)


Son of Sarah and Yechiel, was born on the 21st of Tishri, October 2, 1931 in Tel Aviv. He attended a religious elementary school and while he was still a child, he was orphaned from his father. At the age of 13, he joined the underground movement of “Fighters for the Freedom of Israel” and was involved in the posting of leaflets and the distribution of propaganda material. His friends used to call him “Yosske HaTzchok” because of his laugh that did not go away. He was observant of religion and tradition. When he was 14, Yosef was caught by the British with guns in hand, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Until the British left the country, he served his time in Atlit. Two days after his release, he joined the army, concealing his young age and serving in the 8th Brigade. Yosef served in a commando company and participated in the conquest of Lod, Ramle, Beit-Nabala, and the road to the Negev and Iraq-Suidan. During Operation “Horev” to remove the Egyptian army from Israel, in the battle of Auja al-Hafir, the armored half-track was hit and went up in flames, and Yosef was seriously wounded and taken to the hospital in Beersheba where he died, on 26 Kislev (27.12.1948). He was buried in Halutza, and on 23, Tamuz, 20.7.1949 was transferred to eternal rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak military cemetery.
