Ziv (Sandrov), Yosef (Yossi, Yosef)

Ziv (Sandrov), Yosef (Yossi, Yosef)

Son of Zahava and Dov, was born in Jerusalem in 1925 and studied at the Hebrew Gymnasium. From his childhood, he was a farmer, and after graduating from high school, he went to study at the Kaduri School near Mount Tabor. After completing his studies there he joined the Palmach, spent a year in Yagur and took a commanding officer course. From there he moved to Jerusalem and for two years continued his studies at the Agricultural Institute near the Hebrew University, where he even won a scholarship. After the United Nations General Assembly decided on November 29, 1947, to divide the country into two states, he left his studies – at the same time he had completed his studies at the Ziv Institute in Rehovot – and returned to Jerusalem, He was a modest, quiet and moderate man in every hour of danger, who gave his good spirit to his people, excelled at the level of uninvited hospitality, and was open at all times to anyone who needed to sleep and rest. When he was brought to besieged Jerusalem, hungry and thirsty, he was tormented four months in the hospital and all the doctors’ efforts to save him failed. He died and the fourth operation did not arise again: Yosef died at Hadassah Hospital on August 8, 1948. In those days his father was on a mission to camps in Germany. His last words to his sister, which were aimed at his father, were: “… Tell him that there was no adventurousness – I meant that everything would be for the best …” At that time his father was on his way to Israel, but he did not have time to see him. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
