Zingman, Meir

Son of Leah and Tzemach was born in 1913 in Pinsk, Poland. Acquired a popular education and continued his self-training. His father, who was a locksmith in a factory, inherited love to tell and to know. He was especially interested in studying history and philosophy, and he was astonished by people with higher education. In 1933 he immigrated to Israel and worked as a carpenter. Nevertheless, he found time to expand his theoretical knowledge and his conversation was full of interest. After the UN General Assembly resolution on the partition of the land (29.11.1947), he joined the Hagana and was sent to Safed, where he fought until his last day, and was then besieged by a large force. He served in the position for weeks at a time, without a day of rest or vacation, until he fell on 28 May 1948, when he was hit by a bullet as he prepared to paralyze an enemy sniper who constantly harassed the positions. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Safed.
