Zalmans, Shraga
Shraga, the only son of Rachel and Bezalel Zalmans, was born in 1929 in Sarnesk, Poland. He grew up in a Zionist family, observing religion and tradition, and from his childhood he was fascinated by his love of the Land and the aspiration for it. Shraga immigrated to Israel in 1935. He was hired by the Tel Aviv municipality and won the admiration of his co-workers and superiors. Shraga was very devoted to his parents and was Simcha when he managed to help them. With his diligence and great energy he acquired wide knowledge, especially in the Talmud. He kept and loved tradition and religion. He was a member of the Hagana in the religious company. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he immediately enlisted in the religious unit of the Kiryati Brigade. During his service in the Kiryat Meir input camp he served as a battalion policeman and shortly before his fall was promoted to sergeant. Shraga was hit during an air strike on the 29th of Iyar 5708 (7.6.1948) and was killed on the spot. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
