Zagori, Dov


He was born on the 22nd of Tishrei, (October 25, 1910) in the city of Rzeszow, Latvia, where he grew up and studied. His father was a horse trader and already in his childhood Dov was attracted to horses and eventually became an excellent rider. Among all his acquaintances, he was known as a courageous boy, proud of his Jewishness and fighting back. At an early age, he joined the youth movement Netsach (Pioneer Scouting Youth) and prepared himself to immigrate to Eretz Israel in 1936. He immigrated to Israel in 1936 and turned his passion for horses into occupation and livelihood. And with great ability to fulfill his duties, on the 22nd of Tishrei 5739 (17.10.1938), he went with his friends in a boat to secure the workers in the measurements in Jordan and during the patrol they encountered the tangle of cattails in the ambush of an Arab gang and he was shot and killed in the exchange of fire. His memory was immortalized in the pamphlet “The Twenty-Five Years” and in Davar.
