Zacharin, Yitzhak (Ayza)


Son of Yaffa and Shlomo, was born on April 10, 1926 in Jerusalem. He received his first education at the school for the children of workers in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Kfar Giladi school in Haifa, and finally finished school in Nahalal. After completing his studies, he began working at the Orot printing house in Haifa, but his Lev continued to the village. He joined the “Hacharmesh” pioneering training unit of Hanoar Haoved and went to Kibbutz Ein Gev for training. He moved with his friends to Kibbutz Naan and joined the Palmach, where he completed a commanders’ course and received the position of commander. After a while he moved with his friends to the “Hahotrim” group near Kiryat Haim. Because of differences of opinion, he left the group and joined Kibbutz Mashavim in Herzliya. Recently he was in Nahalal. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was among the first to serve in the Carmeli Brigade. He participated actively in the defense of Haifa and was among the conquerors of Acre and the liberators of the Western Galilee. Served for a while in the Jordan Valley. After stopping the invasion of the Jordan Valley, our forces took the initiative and attacked the Gilboa area. After gaining control of the Gilboa ridge, the Carmeli Brigade attacked Jenin on the night of June 2-3 and occupied the outposts controlling the city. The Iraqi army, which had moved to Samaria after its failure in the Jordan Valley, concentrated its forces and counterattacked and our forces were forced to withdraw. On the 3rd of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948) Peretz broke up with his platoon to Jenin, and when they were inside the city they encountered fire. Yitzhak managed to move his men to a place of refuge, remained the last one, and was hit by a bullet in the head. He was buried in Afula. He put a wife, Miriam and a daughter, Tali. On the 20th of Av 5710 (3.8.1950) he was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
