Yurost, Moshe Hacohen


Son of Pnina and Zvi, was born on August 23, 1929 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. His father, a veteran Zionist, raised the boy in spirit. In 1934 he immigrated to Israel with his parents. Moshe attended the Reali School in Haifa and was a member of the Scouts movement. He was a member of the “Scouts of the Sea” tribe as a dedicated guide to his students in Lev and soul. When some of his pupils needed the money to go to the camp, Moshe went to work painting ships to earn the money. After graduating from the Reali School in the summer of 1947 he went to Palmach training in Dafna and placed himself at the Hagana’s disposal in the Upper Galilee. Here he worked as a driver. From the beginning of the war, even before the Arab armies invaded the country, he and his group went through all the difficult battles to defend the Galilee and its liberation. In one of his letters, he wrote: “It was only after we had fulfilled our task that we realized how much our part in turning the Galilee into a Hebrew Galilee was difficult, but it was worthwhile.” Moshe participated in escorting caravans in the Galilee and in the cruel battle of Nebi Yusha. Was injured in his leg when the Legion camp was captured near Rosh Pina, but even when he was on vacation after his injury, he did not rest until he found a job in a military garage voluntarily. He explained his action: “I am wounded in the leg, but my hands are fine.” In the second phase of the battles, he participated in the conquest of Ramla-Lod, at the opening of the road to the Negev and its possession. Moshe was sent to combat in the Negev, participated in the “Yoav” operation to break the road to the Negev, and was sent for a vacation at the base of his unit in Beit Shean. Where he fell during a face-to-face clash with enemy soldiers on 7 March 1949. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Haifa.
