Yosef, Shimon

Shimon, son of Miriam and Aharon, was born on May 20, 1954 in Hadera. He attended the “Yavne” elementary school in Givat Olga, where his family lived. Afterward he continued to study at the Tachkemoni High School in the real-biological track. He completed his studies at the Hadera General High School. Shimon grew up and was educated in a family that is part of a community of Jews from Kurdistan. His parents were faced with the difficulties of absorption and special absorption for immigrants arriving in a new homeland. He aspired to improve his family’s economic situation, raise its standard of living and bring about the full integration of family members into the country’s life. He knew that in order to realize this, he had to acquire knowledge, and therefore he worked hard on his studies and was an outstanding student. He planned to continue studying after his service in the IDF, but he did not succeed in fulfilling his plans, and devoted his spare time to work to help support the family, and he was very young and energetic. And his willingness to help anyone, even when it was difficult, because of his qualities, he was fond of his classmates and was acceptable to his teachers, Shimon was also an outstanding athlete, he was part of the school team and represented him in competitions and athletic encounters, At the beginning of May 1972. He was early in his induction, in order to finish his service as soon as possible and devote his time And work. He was assigned to the Armored Corps and after basic training he successfully completed a course for combat medics. He was sent to serve in a tank battalion in the Barak Brigade and took part in operational activities on the Golan Heights and on the Lebanese border. Shimon was a dedicated and loyal soldier, who carried out all the tasks assigned to him with precision and completeness. As a combat medic, he provided his colleagues with excellent medical care, and treated each patient with a warm and sensitive attitude. In the Yom Kippur War, the “Barak” Brigade was stationed on the front line in the Golan Heights and participated in the battles of containment and infiltration against the Syrians. These battles suffered heavy losses. On the 7th of Tishrei 5740 (7.10.1973) Shimon was injured and killed in a battle that took place in the Kuneitra area in an attempt to rescue an injured person. He was brought to eternal rest in the Hadera cemetery. Survived by his parents, four sisters and two brothers. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the commander of his unit wrote: “Your son Sgt. Shimon z” l served in an armored unit.
