Yisraeli, Nissan

Nissan, son of Rivkah and Moshe Nissan, was born in the town of Samarkand, Russia in 1928 and he immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1930. In the Second World War with the establishment of the Jewish Brigade in the British Army, Nissan joined the ranks of the Palmach and took part in battles for the breakthrough to Jerusalem. In a solider’s song penned by Nissan, he articulated the vision of a state that would stretch from “from Revivim in the Negev to Metula.” On the 20th of Adar 2, March 31, 1948, a large caravan was organized near Hulda. A delay in organizing the convoy due to mishaps and mud on the way, allowed the Arabs to organize and block the convoy’s path, and it was forced to withdraw during the battle. Nissan refused to retreat and leave his wounded comrades in the battlefield. Nissan died there. He was 20 years old and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Hulda.
