Yazdi, Yosef


Son of Esther and Aharon, was born on 21.6.1926 in Tiberias, and from childhood helped to support the family. In the mornings he attended school and in the afternoon he worked to pay the tuition. To continue his studies at the Tietz vocational school, and he knew that his parents would not be able to bear the expenses involved, so he turned to Henrietta Szold, director of Youth Aliyah, without the knowledge of his parents, but was unable to help him. He enrolled in the British Institute of Commerce Sciences and prepared for the matriculation examinations according to the Institute’s program, and in 1944 he and several members of the Arab community in the Galilee went to work on a plot of land Belonged to the PICA. A year later, he worked as a freelancer at Solel Boneh. He worked in this work until his enlistment. Yosef was a member of the Haganah and was sent to a training course in December 1947. At the end of the course he was sent to the Golani Brigade for Battalion 12. Barak participated in the battles in the Galilee, the Jordan Valley and Tzemach. The battle took place on the eve of the first truce, and the battle failed and our forces suffered heavy losses: On July 11, 1948, Yosef participated in the battle for the conquest of Sejera, where the battle was conducted with the Kaukji Liberation Army, which came from Lebanon. During the fighting in the “Battle Hill,” Joseph fell on the 4th of Tammuz 5708 (11.7.48) and was buried in Tiberias. On the 9th of Av 5712 (31.7.1952) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
