Yaffa, Yaakov

Yaakov, son of Simcha and Aharon Yaffa, was born on 17.4.1931 in Jerusalem and completed five classes in an elementary school and later worked in shoemaking together with his father. He came to train in the Hagana three times a week, despite his exhaustion after a hard day’s work. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Yaakov volunteered for the army. He trained at Givat Ram in the framework of the Gadna and later at Beit Hakerem in the framework of the Infantry Corps. Upon completion of his training he was sent to Neve Yaakov. During Operation Nachshon, Yaakov was among the defenders of the Castel. The Arabs carried out a heavy attack and under pressure from the enemy, the defenders were forced to retreat. Yaakov was wounded in the leg on the 28th of Adar 5708 (8.4.1948). At first he was buried in Kiryat Anavim and from there he was transferred to Ma’aleh Hahamisha. On the 12th of Kislev 5714 (19.11.1953) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
