Yacobi (Berger), Menachem
Son of Gondel and Jacob. He was born on the 20th of Av, 5670 (July 23, 1920) in Marguita, Transylvania (Romania), to traditional parents who kept his Jewish upbringing in secular secular education, first studying Torah and Talmud and then general studies in elementary school. When he grew up, he joined the Betar youth movement and, along with his local activities, prepared himself to immigrate to Eretz Israel. In 1939 he separated from his family and boarded the illegal immigrant ship “Jepo”, but it ran aground near the island of Crete. He was brought up with the rest of the illegal immigrants on the ship “Katina”, which arrived in April after many waves of deportations to the shores of the country. Menachem joined the ranks of the British Military Organization. After World War II, he joined the British Army and in 1944 was attached to the Jewish Brigade. Like many of his friends, he maintained ties with the fighting underground in Israel. In battles against the German enemy on the Senio front in Italy, Nachum was mortally wounded and died of his wounds on March 30, 1945. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Ravenna, Italy. He laid two sisters and two brothers. His parents, who remained in the Diaspora and survived the killing, immigrated to Israel after the war. An investigation conducted in 2017 found that the date of his fall was 30.3.1945. Grave location of grave cIV.B.5. Unit cPalestinecRegimentc rank cPrivate
