Wolfson, Rafael (Rafa)

Rafael (Rafa) was born in 1922 in Berlin, Germany, and from his childhood he sought to immigrate to Israel. He arrived here in 1932 when he was 10. He received a high school education in Israel, where he studied at the Kadouri Agricultural School. Rafael was active in the Haganah. After 29.11.1947, the day of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the partition of the land into two states – Jewish and Arab – he served in company, serving as commander of the armored cars unit and securing convoys to the winepress. He was a good friend and a good commander. He was responsible for covering the retreat; his commanders demanded that he withdraw and he did not agree to retreat before the last of his men were safe. On 12 Nissan, April 21, 1948, he fell and was buried in Kedma, leaving behind a wife and a four-month-old baby girl. After his death, Rafael was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He was later laid to rest in the cemetery in Be’ari.
