Wolf, Carl


Born in Austria. Was among the first Hebrew sailors who boarded the ship “Mount Zion” and one of the most talented mechanics. The ship was part of the shipping company Lloyd Land of Israel, founded in 1934 and aimed at operating Hebrew ships with a Hebrew team and a Hebrew flag. The ship sailed between the ports and the ports of the Black Sea, transporting passengers and luggage and most of its crew were Jews. At the outbreak of World War II, “Mount Zion” was attached to the British merchant fleet and all the enemy-armed seamen and Karl were removed from among them because he was an Austrian citizen. With the intervention of the Jewish Agency and the seamen’s union, his return to the ship was permitted as a third mechanic. “Mount Zion” sailed between Britain and the Mediterranean ports and in 1940 joined the convoys that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in order to break the siege of the German submarines on Britain. On 27 Av, August 31, 1940, “Mount Zion” was drowned by a German submarine. Along with it, 33 seamen descended into the depths of the sea, 17 of them from Eretz Yisrael and Karl among them. On the rafters of the ship “Mount Zion” and the circumstances of its sinking was published in the book “The Conquerors at Sea Netiva”. The memorial service for missing persons was written in the World Zionist Organization’s journal Ha’olam. An investigation conducted in 2017 found that the date of his death was August 31, 1940, on the 27th of Av. Place of commemoration cTOWERcHILLc London, UK.
