Winograd, Simcha

Son of Yehudit and Chaim, was born on October 21, 1927 in Jerusalem to an old Jerusalem family. He studied at Yeshivat Etz Chaim, Yeshivat Chevron and Torat Chaim, and was known as a prodigy. From there he moved to the Mizrachi Teachers’ Seminary and said to continue at the university in the Department of Humanities. Simcha was particularly interested in philosophy and psychology, but he was inclined to art. At the same time, he helped his father, as far as his hand could get, especially after his father’s shop was destroyed in an explosion on son of-Yehuda Street and the family’s sources of income were blocked. With the UN General Assembly resolution on the partition of the land, he joined the ranks of the defenders in the Jerusalem Brigade and organized the volunteer activities of the seminar students. On May 20, 1948, he fell with his friend in a monastery in Jerusalem, when a shell was hit when the legion’s attempt to break into Jerusalem was halted. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. On the 24th of Av 5710 (7.8.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
