Winick, Yosef


Yosef, son of Sarah and Aryeh Winick, was born in 1927 in Lithuania. Yosef went through all the wanderings of the war years in Europe, separation from home, exile in Siberia, incarceration in the camps, hard labor in frost and constant famine. After the war he met again with his parents and together they moved to Germany, but here he parted from them and began to work for the Aliyah Bet organization. For a year he worked there responsibly. When he arrived in Israel on April 14, 1947, he immediately served in the Haganah in Tel Aviv, where he fought in the War of Independence and joined the ranks of the Givati ​​Brigade. A convoy of armored vehicles was sent in order to bring supplies to the soldiers of the Harel Brigade. Enemy armored vehicles opened fire on them. Yosef was hit and after a long delay, was transferred to the hospital in Hulda. He died on 3 Iyar, May 12, 1948. His last request to his friends was to bring his parents here. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Nahalat Yitzhak.
