Werner, Avraham
Son of Hanna and Meir, was born in 1900 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. He immigrated to Israel in 1928. Avraham settled in Tel Aviv, was attracted to military life and the service of the homeland. During the Second World War he enlisted even though the draft decree did not apply to him and served seven years in the British Royal Air Force. When he was released Avraham returned to civilian life and to his profession. With the outbreak of the War of Independence Avraham was one of the first to defend the book neighborhoods. He participated in the battle at the “Yotzek” factory on Givat Herzl and was injured several times without telling his family. Avraham fell on the 20th of Nissan, April 30, 1948, in a battle in the Manshiyeh neighborhood on the Tel Aviv-Jaffa border, when a British tank, which came to the aid of the Arabs, shelled his post. He was transferred to Hadassah Hospital where he died. Avraham was buried in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery, leaving a wife, Miriam, and two daughters.
