Wermel, Alexander


Alexander, son of Dov and Tzilla Wermel, was born in 1918, in Smolensk, Russia. He immigrated to Israel in 1922 with his parents, who were among the first settlers in the village of Yechezkel. During the bloody riots of 1936-1939 he accompanied the Haganah in all its activities. When the War of Independence broke out, he was among the first to be called up and participated in various battles from the Galilee to the Negev. In 1949 he took part in a trip to Eilat, and during the course of his service he fell, on 7 Nisan, 6.4.1949, and was brought to rest in the cemetery in Kfar Yechezkel, leaving behind his wife and two daughters. A nature house in Gesher, which includes a school and study room, bears Alexander’s name.
