Weiss, Shmuel


Son of Esther and Israel Menachem, was born on the 23rd of Elul 5623 (23.8.1923) in the city of Kosice, Czechoslovakia. Grew up in a religious atmosphere in a respectable family in the community and graduated from high school. After his parents were exterminated by the Nazi oppressor, he went to Budapest but returned to his town, to his brother who remained alive, in 1945. A few months later he immigrated to Israel through Romania and all his brothers and sisters. He belonged to the Irgun underground in the War of Independence and participated in the battle for Ramle, and Shmuel was killed in battle on May 11, 1948, and since then he has been considered a space whose burial place is unknown. Following an investigation by the Unit for Locating Missing Persons in the IDF, in cooperation with the Unit for the Commemoration of the Soldier, it was found that Shmuel was brought for burial in 1952 in a mass grave in Kiryat Shaul and that a tombstone was not placed in his name on 18/01/2011. His name was in the mass grave and a ceremony was held to discover a monument
