Weiss, Gideon (“Gidi”)


Son of Yitzhak and Elsa. He was born on March 26, 1942 in Kiryat Bialik near Haifa. After graduating from elementary school in Kirya he continued to study at the agricultural school in Kfar Galim and completed his studies there. He excelled in all branches of mechanization and agriculture. When he reached the age of 18 he was drafted into the IDF (in November 1960) and served in the Armored Corps. He soon became a tank instructor. He spent most of his time in the Negev, where he learned to love and love his surroundings. After completing his military service, he returned with a group of boys and girls of his age to help him on the experimental Neot Hakikar farm. After a while he returned to the city and began striving to fulfill his ambition to be a pilot. Day and night he learned to acquire the theory of flying; The flight itself was an extraordinary pleasure and his certificate as a civilian pilot was accepted on the basis of this study. The days were on the eve of the Six-Day War, and Gideon returned to his unit in the Armored Corps. After two weeks of watching, the unit moved toward Kuntilla and there they attacked it. After the conquest of Qantila, the unit was transferred to the Jordanian and Syrian fronts. On the fifth day of the fighting, on the 9th of June 1967, the battle for Sela in the Golan Heights took place, and sniper fire and Syrian cannons directly hit the tank that Gideon was driving in. One of the crew members fell and the other three managed to jump, He was buried in the military cemetery in Afula and was later transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Nahariya, where his name was immortalized in the booklet published by the Kfar Galim school and also in the booklet of the Kiryat Local Council Bialik.
