Weiss, Dov (Kurt)


Son of Leah and Yosef, was born on 21.9.1923 in Austria. Dov was educated in Czechoslovakia and acquired a high school education. From his youth he was a member of the Young Maccabee. In 1939, he immigrated to Eretz Israel as part of Youth Aliyah and joined the youth group in Degania Bet. In 1940 he enlisted in the British army and served as a mechanic in the Hebrew transport unit in Israel, Egypt, Libya and Italy. After six years of service he was discharged and returned to Israel. During the War of Independence he was in Jerusalem and there he enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces and served in the defense of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood. When he returned to the battalion, he participated in the battles of Jerusalem, Mount Zion, the break-in to the Old City, the commercial center, and the Abu Tor building on July 16, 1948, The first of the truce was found at the observation point at Yemin Moshe. An enemy bullet hit his head and fatally wounded him. He was buried in Sheik-Bader Aleph. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
