Weinstein, Reuven (Rudolf)

Reuven, son of Chaya-Etel and Ahiezer Weinstein, was born on July 7, 1916 in the city of Lvov, Poland. He was a member of an old Zionist family and his father was one of the founders of the Zionist movement “Hanoar Hatzioni” (Zionist Youth). In January 1936 he settled in Jerusalem, worked in clerkship and acquired higher education. His father, brothers and sisters who remained in the Diaspora were murdered by the Nazis shortly after the invasion of Lvov. From 1942 to 1946, Reuven worked as a clerk in the British Army accounts department, and later worked as a clerk in the land department of the Mandatory government. Reuven was among the defenders of besieged Jerusalem in the Battle of Notre Dame on May 24, 1948. He was critically wounded and taken to Hadassah Hospital, where he was operated on, but died on the following day, 16 Iyar, May 25, 1948. He left behind a wife – Vita, a son and a daughter. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
