Weinberg, Yosef

Yosef, son of Luba and Eliezer-Leon, was born on 17 August 1948 in Tel Aviv. He began his studies at the Tel Aviv Education Center and later moved to the “Yosef Haglili” elementary school. At the age of eleven, his family moved to Eilat, where he completed his studies in the state elementary school. He began to study at the high school in Eilat, but after one year he moved to the agricultural high school in Mikveh Israel, where he completed his studies. Joseph, who was called by all Yossi, was kind and pleasant. The door to his house was open to friends and guests who loved to be with him, always willing to be of help to anyone in need. While he was still a boy, Yossi helped his parents at their work, at the cafeteria that they ran in Eilat. He spent his vacations and spare time before enlisting in the IDF to work and help his family, and when he was in high school, he took a course for squad commanders in the framework of the Gadna. Yosef was drafted into the IDF in August 1968 and assigned to serve in the Armored Corps, and after completing basic training he completed a tank commander course and was sent to serve in the Armored Corps in the central sector of Sinai. He then completed a course for armored officers in the Armored Corps School. He returned to the regiment where he began his service, this time as commander of the tank division. Yossi did his service in Sinai during the War of Attrition. As part of his position he was promoted to lieutenant. He was found to be an excellent armored commander, who carried out all the tasks assigned to him with precision and perfection, and was accepted by his soldiers and Ehud for his commanders. In mid-August 1971, Yosef was discharged from the regular army and assigned to a reserve unit of the Armored Corps, as commander of the tank division. After his discharge, he worked at the Mekorot Water Desalination Plant in Eilat, and at the same time continued to help his parents in the business they owned. In 1972 he began working for El Al as a security guard on her flights. He traveled to foreign countries many times and used his time there to conduct tours and tours of interesting sites and beautiful landscapes. Also much to do with his favorite sport – skating on the snow. In March 1973 he married his girlfriend Aliza and built his home in Ramat Gan. He went on to work for El Al and then worked as a security guard at Arkia, where his wife, who was studying at Tel Aviv University, worked. Yossi aspired to continue his studies and prepared to complete his matriculation exams in order to be admitted to university, but his dream was not fulfilled. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Yossi hurried to return to Israel and joined his armored unit, which fought in the central sector of the Sinai and participated in the battles of containment and the conquest against the Egyptians On October 16, 1973, Yosef died and he was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Eilat. Left behind a wife and son – Yosef, who was born after his fall and named after him, father, mother and sister. His father died about eight months after his fall. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the commander of his unit wrote: “Dear parents, your son Weinberg, Yossi, served in my unit and fell in the Yom Kippur War in the battle for the West Bank of the Suez Canal. As a commander in the battalion, he served as an example to his soldiers and commanded his unit with courage and composure.”
