Wasserberg, Bertold (Bert)
Bertold, son of Chanah and Sigmund, Wasserberg was born on the 28th of Tishrei, October 22, 1919 in Berlin, the capital of Germany. After Hitler came to power in Germany, he set out on a rescue mission to the Netherlands. His parents followed the path of the refugees to Shanghai. There is no clear information about his hardships during the war years. In 1946 he came to Israel. During the War of Independence he served in the Givati Brigade and participated in Operation Chametz for the encirclement of Jaffa and its defeat. Bertold fell in battle in Tel Arish on the 19th of Nissan, April 28, 1948. A monument in his memory was erected in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
