Vettenberg David
David (Dudi), son of Hanna and Rudolf-Raphael. Born on April 1, 1954 in Haifa, his parents, Holocaust survivors who remained the sole survivor of their extended family, studied at the Be’eri Elementary School in Haifa, and then continued his studies at the A-School. David was a sports enthusiast and was an outstanding athlete, a member of the Maccabi Haifa Association, and was also a champion of the youth in a soccer match, and was sent to camps for gifted athletes every summer. Carmel, and then throughout the country, he had a special experience at the age of 14 when David decided to go out with another friend to take a walk through Nahal Kziv. They searched for them all night, and even feared that they had crossed the border into Lebanon, and that the next day the two of them arrived at the Maona police station, which was published in the press. May 1972 and chose to serve in the Armored Corps. After basic training and vocational training, he was stationed in the central sector of the Suez Canal in Battalion 184 of the 14th Brigade. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he was sent to the Sinai front with his unit and participated in the battles of containment and break-ins against the Egyptians. He was one of the first fighters to arrest the masses of Egyptian soldiers. During the fighting he saved his good friend, Moshe Shemesh, from the burning tank, which was badly burned. His crew lost three tanks in these battles. The day before his fall, he took part in the battle that marked the turn of the war in which the Egyptian armor suffered a great defeat. The following day, the General Staff decided to embark on the battle to break into the African continent. The task was assigned to the division of Arik Sharon and his brigade was the spearhead of the operation. In the battle that took place on October 15, 1973, at the “Tartur-Lexicon” intersection, in the area of the Chinese farm, his tank was hit by a missile and David was hit and killed on the spot. His body was discovered and he was brought to eternal rest at the Hof Hacarmel military cemetery in Haifa, where he was raised to the rank of corporal and left behind by his brother and sister, and after 28 years of his death, on the 20th of Tishrei 5762, Rotem-Dalit. A commemorative corner was erected in memory of David who was active in the gym in the fitness room of the Maccabi Haifa team for swimming and athletics at Maccabi Haifa in Haifa. In recent years, from the “Day of Good deeds 2012”, the family commemorates David with a visit to the outposts of the fighters every Friday before the Sabbath. This action strengthens the fighters mentally. At each arrival we talk to the fighters and mention the story of his downfall in David’s battle. In addition, they are photographed with the fighters and the photos are uploaded to the Facebook page “Chepour Warriors”. As of the end of 2014, Chopro had over 260 combat companies.
