Veg, Jacob (Yaki)
Son of Neti and Hermann was born on the 22nd of Tishrei 5724 (2.10.1923) in the city of Cluj (Transylvania), Romania. when he was a boy, he found the way to Hashomer Hatzair and when he immigrated to Israel in 1941 he joined the youth movement at Kibbutz Merhavia. 1948. After the failure of the first attack On Latrun, the brigade launched another attack on the legion compound on the night of May 30-31. Yaakov was the commander of the half-tracks force to conquer the Latrun police force. The force burst into the police yard, but here came the heavy fire of the enemy, and the wounded soldier and the infantry force that was supposed to assist in the occupation were delayed, the order was given to withdraw, and Jacob was forced to take out all the wounded. – Go away. I’ll be left here. “One of the drivers grabbed his arms and said to put him on the half-track despite his orders, but a few minutes later he died. Jacob fell in daylight on May 31, 1948. After his fall, he was given the rank of captain. His memory was included in the booklet “Six Fallen” which was published by Kibbutz Merhavia in memory of the six comrades who fell in the battles of the War of Independence. On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
