After basic training he was placed in the IAF and was sent to a school for artillery fire. After only four months of service, on the 16th of Kislev 5712 (16.12.1979), Aviv fell during his service and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Haifa. Left parents and sister. In a letter of condolence to the family, the school commander wrote: “Aviv adapted quickly to the rules of military behavior, and immediately invested his energies in the material that was taught in the course. To inquire, to investigate and to deepen, and these qualities placed him in the first row of the course’s students, and his excellent achievements were also expressed in the weekly tests, which we always felt gratified by the fact that we were not training another soldier, but rather an excellent fighter in his profession.”
