Trachtenbruith, Israel (Srul)


Son of Eva and Chaim. Born in the Soviet Union on March 27, 1947, Srul was twenty-six years old and immigrated to Israel with his parents, his wife Sima and his eldest daughter Regina, who was one year old. 1974, Srul was drafted into the army. As an immigrant, he had to take only six months of service. The goal was to obtain basic training as a soldier so that he could go to reserve service like any other citizen in the country. He was stationed in the Artillery Corps, went on basic training and was sent to learn the artillery profession. Srul completed this period of service and the certificate of liberation was written ‘Excellent Soldier’. At the same time, he began working in 1974 in the Electric Company in the Afula region, and in his last position served as deputy director of work in communications. On October 30, 1989, Srul was called to active reserve duty. On the 16th of Cheshvan 5708 (13.11.1989) he fell in battle in Gaza. He was hit in the head by terrorist fire and evacuated in critical condition to the hospital, where he died. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Afula. Survived by his father, Raya – Sima, Bat Regina and two sons – David and Chen. Shortly after his death, his father Haim died. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, then-defense minister Yitzhak Rabin wrote: “Srul served in an artillery battalion, was an excellent soldier and served as a pillar of the team. The Jewish student organization in Rome planted a tree in its memory in the forest of the Jewish National Fund. His family commemorated his donation to the synagogue, which was meant to recite Kaddish and study Mishnayot.
