Toby, Shlomo


Shlomo, son of Malka and Chaim Toby, was born on the 23rd of Adar I 5708 (March 4, 1948) in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Alexander Yannai Elementary School and the Max Payne Professional School in Tel Aviv and later continued his studies at the ORT vocational school in Ramat Gan. Shlomo was an outstanding student, loved by his teachers and accepted by his friends. He has always helped the weak students and taken part in plays and entertainment at the school. He was a member of the Scout movement and was sent by the movement’s center to Greece to participate in the international jamboree held there. When he returned he joined the photography department at the Youth Arts Club and deepened his knowledge of this hobby that stuck with him until the day he died.
Shlomo was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in May 1966 and assigned to the Armored Corps, where he completed a course in the “Centurion” tank, where he was an outstanding trainee. In 1967 he participated in the Six-Day War. In 1968, he participated in the IDF’s operation in Karameh. After he was released from regular army service, Shlomo began working at the Israel Aircraft Industries in Lod, and later became a quality critic. Shlomo was a loyal son and devoted to his family. He was a loving husband to his wife, Virginia. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Shlomo was drafted and sent to the front in the Golan Heights. On October 6, 1973, his tank was hit in the battle for the oil pipeline near Hosheniya, and he was killed on the spot. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. He left behind a wife, a father, a mother and two sisters. His daughter, who was born after he fell, was namedafter him – Shlomit. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant.
