Toby, Menachem (“Claude”)


Menachem, son of Nanny and Emily Toby, was born in Tunis, Tunisia on December 21, 1939. The family immigrated to Israel in 1951 and he was drafted into the IDF in August 1958. After completing his compulsory service, he was called from time to time to reserve duty. In the Six Day War he was also called to serve in the Armored Corps. Menachem served as a driver in a patrol jeep who headed a battalion, and then, in a battle between Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis, he fell. It was on the first day of the fighting, June 26, 1967. left a wife and two sons; the second son was born only a few days after the fall of his father. He was buried in the military cemetery in Bari and later moved to the eternal rest of the military cemetery in Be’er Sheva.
