Tenenbaum, Ayala (Hinda)

Daughter of Zivia Bracha and Yaakov Aryeh. She was born on the 13th of Kislev, November 19, 1926 in Krasnick, Poland. In 1943 she immigrated to Israel in the first convoy of the “Tehran Children.” On the 21st of Kislev 5706, November 26, 1945, Ayala was among the masses of Jews who streamed towards Givat Haim in order to thwart a British attempt to conduct an identification and search operation in the country following the explosion of an observation post by the Haganah. Ayala was in a group that tried to reach Givat Hayim from nearby Ein Hahoresh. The British soldiers blocked their way and threatened to open fire if they continued to advance, but the crowd continued to move. The soldiers began to fire, but dozens of people continued to run forward and Ayala among them. Twelve bullets hit her and killed her. She was buried in the cemetery in Pardes Hannah. Her name is engraved on a monument erected near Givat Haim in memory of the seven fallen soldiers that day. Her heroism is mentioned in Michael Bar-Zohar’s book “Ben-Gurion” and in “The History of the Haganah”; Dr. Haim Chmiel, a teacher, devoted a special mention of her in the book “The Tehran Children.”
