Tamir (Kaplan), Amnon

Son of Moshe and Shoshana. He was born on July 19, 1944 in Atlit. He received his elementary education in the town where he was born, and he completed his high school studies in Kfar Galim and the Bialik High School in Haifa. He was close to nature and loved the view of his quietness, and at the same time he loved the sea storm and the feel of his waves as he raged furiously on the island reefs. He also loved animals and was sensitive to others, and he was naturally curious about new things on the trip and on the trip. He loved the swimming sport, which was close to his profession in his military life, since he loved the sea since his childhood, since he was in Atlit and Kfar Galim. When he reached the enlistment age in August 1962, he wanted to volunteer for an aviation course because of his love for the challenges, but due to a flaw in his vision, he was disqualified. Afterward, he volunteered for the Navy for submarine service and served for six years – first in the “Tanin” submarine and later in the “Dakar” submarine. Before leaving for England, he proudly told his girlfriend: “When I get back from England I’ll take you to the submarine and then you can see with your own eyes where I spend part of my time.” Amnon was a career soldier and was ordained a submarine in September 1963. Of all the subjects of the submarine, Amnon chose the underwater profession, which requires a great deal of sincerity in reporting and analytical ability. Amnon stood by these demands and succeeded. Upon leaving for England, he joined the “Dakar” team. One day, however, when the submarine was on its way between Gibraltar and the port, the connection with it was cut off and never renewed; This was on the 24th of Tevet 5728 (25.1.1968). The Chief Military Rabbinate determined that the date of Amnon’s death, in the course of his duties with the rest, is January 30, 1968. Since Amnon was one of the missing team members, a monument was placed inside him in a memorial to the Dakar people in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. A few pages were devoted to his thanks and on him in the book “Baqom Yisrael” published by the “Bialik” Gymnasium in Haifa. On the 28th of June 1999, after years of searching, the INS Dakar submarine was found on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, at a depth of 2,900 meters on its planned sailing route and 250 miles from the port of Haifa. A space whose burial place is unknown.
