Tamari, Yaakov-Zvi

Tamari, Yaakov-Zvi

Zvi, son of Tzila and Avraham Baruch Tamari, was born in 1903, in the city of Antwerp, Belgium. As a young boy, he moved with his parents to the Netherlands. After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher in a Hebrew school. His father, who was a Hassidic Jew and educated in the spirit of Zionism, died when Zvi was a boy, so Zvi and his brother worked to support the family. In 1929, he immigrated to Israel. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Zvi volunteered for service, although he had a large family and was above the age of enlistment. He went to the most dangerous positions and there he fell, on the ninth of Tammuz (16.7.1948), when one of the houses, where he was on guard, exploded. His wife died shortly after and their four children remained orphans from both father and mother. Zvi was laid to rest in the cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
