Tal (Peled), David
Son of Chana and Zelig, was born on 26.5.1923 in the city of Kutno, Poland. A descendant of a celebrated and privileged family. When he was ten, he immigrated with his parents to Israel and studied at the Moriah Gymnasium. From his youth he was an active member of the “Elitzur” and “Bnei Akiva” and also a member of the Gadna, and later joined the Haganah, where he worked as a Haganah officer in the Ephraim region for six months. In 1946, he married his girlfriend Ruth, who gave birth to their son, Ehud, who worked in drawing and molding, but did not stop his blessed activities in the Haganah and served as a topography instructor. He was active in the Training Department and afterwards as a company commander in the Mishmar Hayarden sector, where he often discovered his talents and courage. After the first truce he returned to the training department and from there was transferred to the Negev and undertook to organize a battalion that was mostly of Gahal. With this battalion he participated in the first battles to eradicate the Egyptian invader. Before one of the attacks on the Egyptian strongholds in the Bir Asluj area, he left his farm base in Revivim to his home, contrary to the doctor’s request, which forbade him to leave because of his high temperature. David went to his men accompanied by a few soldiers, but the Egyptians felt the car and shelled it. He returned the car to the base and decided to finish his journey on foot. Before they reached the outpost they boarded a mine in Bir-Asluj. David was killed and his friends were lightly injured. This was on the 23rd of Kislev 5709 (December 23, 1948). He was laid to rest at the Revivim cemetery. After his fall, he was promoted to First Lieutenant (lieutenant).
