Szilard, Ezra (Diori)


Son of Cattelina and Shmuel Sandor was born on December 12, 1920, in the city of Shiklos, Hungary and began to study shoemaking to prepare himself for immigration to Eretz Israel. Ezra arrived in Eretz Israel in 1940 and was arrested in Atlit for 11 months, and when he was liberated from Atlit, he joined Kibbutz Kfar Szold. In 1947, he joined the Haganah and after the establishment of the State of Israel he joined the army and served in Brigade 7. About two weeks after his enlistment he participated in Operation Ben-Ami and in this battle he fell, on the 30th of May 1948. He left behind his fiancée in Hungary, and before leaving for battle he asked her in a letter that if he fell and she married someone, she would call her son after him. He was buried in Na’an on 18.5.1950, and was transferred to the military cemetery in Haifa.
