Sukenik, Eliyahu (Eli)
Son of Nechama and Moshe. He was born in 1901 in Bialystok, Poland, where he completed his studies in a vocational school in the electrical engineering course. In his youth he was active in the He-Chaluts movement and served as a secretary in the local branch of the movement. From that time, he aspired to immigrate to Eretz Israel and his ambition was fulfilled in 1924. Elyiahu settled in Haifa and studied electrical engineering at the Technion. He later joined the Haganah to participate in the defense of the city and the security of its inhabitants, and during the construction of the port in Haifa Eliyahu was sent to the Haganah and the Electric Company to assist in the electrical work in the area. On 21 Adar, March 12, 1939, he was called upon to repair a lantern that had been hung on a pole next to the port gate and in the afternoon he arrived with his assistant. An Arab assassin came out of the ambush and shot him in the head, and he was seriously wounded in the head and fell. He was buried in the Haifa cemetery. He left three brothers and four sisters. Lists of his actions and the circumstances of his death were published in the Davar and Haaretz newspapers.
