Suissa, Zion


Zion, son of Tamar and Isaac, was born on 2 January 1952 in Casablanca, Morocco, and in the year 5717 he immigrated with his family to Israel. The family settled in Moshav Gadish, where he studied Zion at the Magen Elementary School. At the moshav he was a member of the sports department, and because he excelled in his achievements, he was sent to participate in a course at the Wingate Institute. From a young age, he had a talent for singing and he was happy to sing to his family and friends in the evenings and at parties. After completing his studies, he studied for two years at the “Bnei Akiva” Yeshiva, and then completed his high school studies at the ORT vocational school, with the aim of mechanics. Zion was drafted into the IDF in early August 1970 and assigned to the Armored Corps, where he was a welder, metalworker and engraver according to his profession, was assigned to the technical unit and completed his compulsory service as commander of the unit. He served with his unit in the Golan Heights and on October 7, 1973, he was killed and fell in the harsh battles that took place between Hoshenia and Bafah, and was brought to eternal rest in the Afula cemetery, leaving behind his parents, two brothers and three sisters. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan wrote: “Zion was a dedicated soldier and a loyal friend . He was loved by everyone who knew him.” In his memory, the family donated a Torah scroll to the synagogue in Moshav Gadish.
